In order for this website to operate, the Google spreadsheet at (tinyurl.com/Authortube) is downloaded every half hour. Data about featured youtube channels like channel name, channel handle, channel URL, channel avatar URL are stored and kept indefinitely or until it requires updating as youtubers make changes to their channel.

The Youtube API is used primarily to know which streams are currently live. Additional info is sometimes also acquired such as the URL of the live video and URL of the thumbnail of said video. The update avatar URL may also be acquired through Youtube's API when channels update their avatar.
